6 to 12 Person Domestic sewage treatment plants
Domestic sewage treatment plants are sized based upon the number of bedrooms in a property. 6 Person (6PE) sewage treatment plants are suitable for a house with up to and including 4 bedrooms, this is by far the most popular size for single dwellings. Above 4 bedrooms (6PE) you add 1 P per bedroom so, for instance, a 5 bedroom house would require a 7 person treatment plant (7PE) and 6 bedroom house would require an 8 person treatment plant (8PE) and so on.
A 12 person sewage treatment plant (12PE) will be suitable for up to 2 x 4 Bedroom properties if they are sharing a system.
When choosing the correct plant it is important to consider any future development of the property as Building Control will insist on a sewage treatment plant which is capable of handling the correct flows and loads for the property. If for instance you have a 3-bed house and are planning on adding a single bedroom annexe you should allow for this when sizing the plant and opt for a minimum of an 8 person plant (8PE).
